Learn how to read a phonics book with your chid or student. Phonics books usually have a focus sound that is repeated. Use phonics books that are at your child's instructional level or higher. This means that you child car read with 90% or more accuracy. Encourage you child to sound out words that he knows all of the elements for. Go over unusual names and new vocabulary or sight words before reading. Have your child follow with their finger. Check for comprehension by observing enjoyment or engagement. You may want to check for understanding by asking a few questions or ask the child to retell the story. Phonics books are usually simple. Leveled readers are better used for teaching comprehension strategies. Phonics books are mostly for building skills but even so check for comprehension so that your child will pay attention to the story line as well as the focus sound or spelling patterns. Please see Part II- "How to Read a Leveled Reader with You Child or Student"
